Austin, Texas

You know you’re hearing the liberal beat in the heart of a conservative state when you consider that this city’s rallying cry is “Keep Austin Weird.” Equal parts college campus, state capital, high-tech boom town, and possibly the live music center of the universe, Austin dishes up all manner of world cuisine. But face it: you’re in the middle of Texas. Eat the barbecue (with sauce on the side if you know what’s good for you) or revel in a regional food fusion that makes expats as nostalgic about Austin’s Tex-Mex as a certain Frenchman was about madeleines. Walk it off with a stroll over Congress Avenue Bridge, where the country’s largest bat colony takes flight at dusk—or up Sixth Street, where the club scene rocks the night.

Cream Corn Like No Other

Reviewed on Dec. 1, 2008 by Spicy Mama
I made this for Thanksgiving -- such an impressive addition (everyone thought I had gone all out). But so simple! And my 92 year old grandmother said it was just like the creamed corn her mother used to make -- she asked for the recipe! Just a hint -- you can use half and half in place of the milk and cream since the recipe calls for equal amount of each. Also, watch out for scorching -- I caught mine just in time. Great recipe -- thanks so much for sharing!

I thought this was a great weeknight recipe - one you can throw together quickly but tastes like you spent more time on it. I added 1/2 lb of shrimp and subbed beer for the water.

No Bake Cookies III

Reviewed on Nov. 30, 2008 by MARCY
WARNING: Only make these when there is a large group of people you want to feed, otherwise you'll just end up eating them yourself! I love these - sort of like fudge - very rich. I ran out of milk and just used plain old water - added a little more oats and they were fine.
