Midwestern USA

The American Midwest is the bread basket of the nation. It cuts a large swath from the Great Lakes states out to the Dakotas and south to Kansas. Here in the Heartland, the farms produce the vegetables, grains, fruits, dairy, and meats that feed the rest of the country. When people talk about "American food," they often mean Midwestern cuisine. The cheesy casseroles, beefy pot roasts, baked pastas, meat and potatoes, and homemade pies -- the soothing comfort foods that get us through a chilly winter evening. If you had homemade pie for breakfast this morning, you might qualify as a Midwesterner. Generally speaking, Midwestern cuisine is honest and hearty rather than fancy and frivolous, flavorful but not aggressively spiced.

Chicken Katsu

Reviewed on Sep. 8, 2008 by Kris Granholm
Simple yet tasty. My oil was a bit hot on the first try and I blackened the coating a little but chicken came out perfect. Second time around was spot on, golden and crispy. Seems too simple a recipe for the great results. Next time I'll try kicking things up with some curry powder.

Easy Apple Strudel

Reviewed on Sep. 7, 2008 by RALWATTAR
The base recipe is a good idea but it needs tweaking. I added cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla extract, and walnuts. I also used phyllo dough sheets instead of puff pastry (personal preference), but I imagine it would also taste delicious with puff pastry. I drizzled slices of strudel with maple syrup as a final touch. Took this to a party and I got rave reviews, so will make again.

Jalapeno Popper Spread

Reviewed on Sep. 7, 2008 by Monica
I made this for a party this weekend, and everyone loved it! The only things I did differently were using only canned jalapenos because the store was apparently experiencing some sort of hot pepper shortage, and I put some bread crumbs on top before baking.
